Katie Holmes Elle Cover Story: Signs of Tom Cruise Split?

Katie Holmes covers the new issue of Elle, and you can't help but read into some of her quotes knowing she was about to file for divorce from Tom Cruise.
Perhaps most notably: "I definitely feel much more comfortable in my own skin," the actress, 33, says of having progressed in her 30s. "I feel sexier."
She goes on, "I think in my twenties – it’s like you’re trying too hard to figure everything out ... I’m starting to come into my own. It’s like a new phase."

On the subject of being Mrs. Tom Cruise, which she apparently had enough of just weeks after giving this interview, she also hints at the breakup.
"He has been Tom Cruise for 30 years," she says. "I know who I am and where I am and where I want to go, so I want to focus on that."
As for his impact on her own career: "Things are not handed to anyone. If anything, you work a little bit harder when you’re in such visible circumstances."
Who knows if it means anything, but the NY Post says Katie did not enjoy speaking about Tom, who allegedly begged for reconciliation and is very bitter at her.
“Katie didn’t speak about Tom in a lovey-dovey way at all" in the interview. "She deflected the Tom questions and brought them around to herself.”
Reading between the lines or just coincidence? You be the judge.

Prince William: Knighted in Scotland!

With the lovely, supportive Kate Middleton by his side, Prince William was knighted as a member of the Order of the Thistle in Scotland on Thursday.
He received the title from his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II – the highest honor she can bestow in Scotland – around his 30th birthday last month.
In a nod to her Scottish title, the Countess of Strathearn, Kate Middleton wore a soft yellow coat dress specially made for her by Emilia Wickstead.

Kate and William fell in love at St. Andrews University, just outside the Scottish capital, Edinburgh, where the grand ceremony took place at St. Giles Cathedral.
A pipe band heralded the beginning of the festivities before the royals arrived. Kate had a few words and a smile with a church official and was then escorted in.
No reports of the Queen hating on her today, so that's good.
Prince William then joined other members of the Order of the Thistle. After several minutes, he walked to the cathedral alongside his aunt, Princess Anne.
Like the other knights, including the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, he wore a deep-green velvet cloak and matching hat adorned with a white ostrich feather.
This is actually William's second honorary knighthood. He was invested in the Order of the Garter at Windsor Castle in 2008. Congratulations to the royal!

Lindsay Lohan for Marc Ecko

Lindsay Lohan for Marc Ecko
Hot on the heels of yet another failed drug test, this may be the last we see of La Lohan for a very long time. Why artists and brands still collaborate on projects with the celeb junkie is beyond question, but when you think of just how much interest and publicity ‘fire crotch’ attracts, it seems an obvious choice.

After hitting the fashion rounds throughout 2009 with her own leggings line (did that actually take off?) and then teaming up with Emanuel Ungaro to a less than stellar reception it seems that NY streetwear designer Marc Ecko wants nothing more than to give the Mean Girl another chance. Maybe he’s regretting that now, after news broke over the weekend that the recently released jail birdette failed yet another la coca test!

With his grown man Cut and Sew line, Marc Ecko steers well clear of his hip hop urban past, shelving his oversized denims and flashy sports tops in favour of pea coats and cardigans. Touted as a collection ‘for those that want to start dressing a little more serious but still maintain their youthful edge’, Ecko ropes in Lohan as his muse. I’m guessing one look at Lindsay’s ample knockers, fellas will be running for the racks to rock Marc’s classier cuts.

Ecko’s decision to bring Lilo on board as muse is simple. She evokes emotion and creates a buzz that we all love to hate and hate to love. She creates an aura of mystic especially as a sex symbol – luring men to their knees, while bedding women and proudly announcing her lesbian affairs. You go guuurl! As Marc states ‘she manages to create a sense; something you can touch and feel. For better or worse, Lindsay does that to us. She provokes our emotional state. By her design, or our own doing. Her gestures, words and gaze have a way of getting us all worked up. To me, that is what it means to muse’.

Not sure if I’m entirely convinced, but as someone who is continually intrigued by this misfit of mis-guideness, the entire multi media campaign is a brilliant manipulation in creating an excitement for a brand that has little to do with a drug addicted startlet.

Higgs boson party to pay off for Melbourne

kerrie leishman illo atom BusinessDay 07/07/2012 THE challenge in running cost-benefit analysis on publicly funded major events surfaced again this week with the announcement in Melbourne that the basic building block of matter, the Higgs boson particle, had been found after almost 50 years of searching.
Australia boxes above its natural weight in the world of physics, but it was only a small part of a massive multinational effort to find the Higgs boson using the $US10 billion Large Hadron Collider, a 27-kilometre-long particle accelerator that lies beneath the French-Swiss border near Geneva.
There are about 10,000 particle physicists in the world, and about 30 Australians worked on one of two experiments aimed at finding the particle that were run by CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research.
The lead local was Professor Geoff Taylor, a University of Melbourne physicist who runs the Australian Research Council Centre for Excellence for Particle Physics at the Tera-scale (a Tera is a million million units, and in this case it signifies that the scientists are looking at very small particles indeed).
He and a small government-private sector-funded vehicle, the Melbourne Convention and Visitors Bureau (MCVB), joined forces to mount an Olympics-style campaign that resulted in Melbourne and Australia being linked to one of most important scientific announcements in history.
The MCVB is tiny. It generated revenue of $11.5 million in the 2010-2011 financial year, including $7.3 million of annual state government funding that survived this year's Victorian budget cuts and is secure until 2014. The City of Melbourne contributes another $1 million year in a funding deal that will be renegotiated next year, and the rest comes mainly from subscription fees from over 250 companies that resource conference projects, and profit from them.
The business convention market is the highest yielding segment of the tourism industry: MCVB's latest estimate is that convention delegates spend $757 a day.
MCVB is too small, however, to take on commercial risk on the conventions it helps attract to the city, 210 of them in 2011-2012. Instead, it identifies convention opportunities, scopes them, and joint-ventures projects with convention hosts. The hosts take the commercial risk, and MCVB and its member organisations provide expertise in bidding for events, and designing and running them.
MCVB approached Geoff Taylor in 2005 and successfully proposed a bid to host the 34th International Conference on High Energy Physics that would see the University of Melbourne take on the commercial risk.
The conference is held every two years by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics and is an event that has to be won, in a competitive tender that lays out the scientific and commercial cases for the proposed host city.
Taylor's group and the MCVB pitched for the 2006 conference as a learning exercise. It was awarded to Moscow. They launched a serious bid for the 2008 conference but lost to Philadelphia, and lost the 2010 conference narrowly to Paris.
High-end research is an industry like any other. Funding is a function of progress, and the pressure on CERN was intense by 2010 given that the Large Hadron Collider had been operating for two years. Speculation that the Higgs boson would be unveiled in Paris was rife - but no announcement was made, and after going so close in the 2010 contest, Melbourne was in the box seat. It was confirmed as the 2012 host last year.
There is obviously some luck in the timing of Melbourne's capture of this conference, which began this week with co-ordinated announcements in Melbourne and Geneva that the Higgs boson had been identified.
The conference is also not going to shift Australia's economic dial. Financially it may only break even, because the strong Australian dollar and the European recession held numbers to about 800, that is 200 less than initially expected. MCVB is organising other conferences that are 10 times larger.
But there's an intangible dividend from this latest iteration of a public-private project. It's history now that Melbourne was where the Higgs boson discovery was revealed, and reported in thousands of stories around the world. That's publicity you can't buy, and there could be longer term dividends in research, say, post-graduate enrolments or perhaps eventually in commercially applied science. There should be more intelligently designed and skilfully executed projects like these.
GINA Rinehart's sale of 86.5 million shares in Fairfax yesterday cuts her stake from almost 19 per cent to just under 15 per cent, but it is only a tactical retreat. She still wants board seats, and the buyer, Perpetual, appears to think that fresh faces are needed.
Her company, Hancock Prospecting, said last night that it did not intend to ''make an offer'' for Fairfax. But it also renewed its request for the appointment of two of its nominees and a new independent director to the media group's board, and called again for chairman Roger Corbett's tenure to be tied to performance milestones.
The board's requirement that she sign off on the group's independence charter and its belief that the board presence she seeks would give her too much influence are the big stumbling blocks: there has been no sign that Fairfax or Mrs Rinehart are prepared to give ground.
By moving below 15 per cent she may have more tactical options, however. If she were above 15 per cent and on the board, an exclusion clause in Fairfax's directors and officers insurance policy would be triggered, leaving other directors exposed to personal liability in the event of legal action by her. Rather than indemnify them, she has chosen to move down below 15 per cent, to a point where the exclusion clause is neutralised.
If she runs a successful campaign with shareholders for her appointment, in an extraordinary meeting or at Fairfax's next annual meeting, there is less risk now that her appointment would result in a wave of board departures. Rinehart still wants a say inside Fairfax, and she is still manoeuvering to get it: the Game of Thrones continues.

The Real Housewives of Orange County Season Finale Recap: Things Fall Apart

Friendship bracelets, Pussycat dolls, Costa Rica, engagement rings, and cake-eating party crashers. This season of The Real Housewives of Orange County has had it all.
Tonight, on the season finale, notes are compared and confrontations are had.
Find out how it all goes down with THG's official +/- recap!
The Real Housewives of Orange County Cast
Sarah's still being a ball of drunken crazy about being picked on for breaking the cake. Over her. Minus 3.
In two signs of the Apocalypse, Terry calls Brooks "a really nice guy" (Minus 4) and Tamra decides to eat carbs (Plus 4).
To commemorate their five months of being friends, and as a tit-for-tat from the first episode, Gretchen gives Tamra a friendship bracelet. Each charm represents something special, but one heart represents how Tamra's unbreakable. Tamra tells Gretchen she loves her and thanks her for being such a good friend.
And then she cries again. While Tamra needs to lay off the booze tonight, it's a nice moment for these ladies. Plus 10.
Sarah's still whining about the cake and has the audacity to call Heather the rude one. Heather calls for the "heavy artillery" - a bunch of ladies in cocktail dresses and Terry and says it's time for Sarah to go. Plus 3.
Alexis tries to get louder than everyone else to bring about a resolution and Slade speaks up as the voice of reason. There's no need for a resolution. There's a need for Sarah to leave because that's what's been asked of her.
As they get Sarah to the door, the greatest line in all of reality television ever, or maybe just this season, falls out of Sarah's mouth: "Is this the world we live in? Over a bleeping piece of tiny cake?"
Yes, Sarah. Yes it is. Buh-bye. Plus 10.

Heather Dubrow Pic
The party's still rocking at Chateau Dubrow, and Vicki decides it's time to "apologize" to Ryan for bringing him up in her fight with Briana. But in Vickiwood, apologize means "talk about yourself and make things all about how everyone else is wrong." Minus 17.
She thinks Ryan will help her get Briana back, but Ryan says this is really Vicki's problem. Then she says "I love you. I don't know you and you took my daughter away, but I love you." Uh, thanks? Ryan loves you too? Minus 8.
Alexis is rambling on to Brooks about how Jim isn't there because he didn't want to be there. And who sneaks in the door but Jim!
Heather's Drama-Senses are tingling and Alexis is chipper over Jim's arrival. WAY chipper. Way more than just one cocktail chipper. Minus 11. Terry comments to a guest that Jim "grew a pair and showed up" right before he does the man-hug-handshake thing that men do.
In Camp Gunvalson, Jeana's daughter Kara sees Slade hug Tamra and is confused. Gretchen applies Tamra's lipgloss (by kissing her) and Vicki goes traipsing across the yard. She thinks Tamra and Gretchen's friendship is fake and calls Tamra a brown-noser. Let it go, Vicki. Gretchen's just more fun than you. Minus 7.
Slade offers up his services as bouncer again should Terry need them. He's prepared to send Jim packing if he needs to. Terry asks if they're okay and Jim says they'll talk next week.
Alexis says they should just talk now and in a complete douchebag move, Jim asks "really? Are you wearing the pants?" Minus 50. I just can't stand this man.
Jim and Terry go talk and Terry's straight up with Jim. He thinks Alexis is phony and inauthentic. Plus 5. Heather walks up and Jim nods in her direction and says this is the reason he wanted to talk next week.
Jim's got a problem with the women-folk. But, the talk continues. Until Tamra walks up. Then Jim's out. Minus 10, Tamra. This wasn't your conversation to have.
Alexis says Heather shouldn't have even been in the conversation and it should've just been Jim and Terry, man-to-man. Actually, sweetheart, it should've been YOU and Terry because Terry talked about you. But whatever.
Par-Tay
Alexis goes out to talk to Jim and Jim's pulling out of the driveway without her. She practically has to chase him down the driveway to get him to stop the car. Minus 12.
The gang's all at the table now. And the booze is flowing. Vicki toasts to the absent Alexis and Tamra rolls her eyes. Brooks challenges her, saying she gave Vicki the "Evil Eye," and picks a fight with Tamra on Vicki's behalf. Gretchen says a fight's been brewing between the two of them for months.
Tamra and Brooks start to argue and then Vicki tells Eddie to get control of Tamra, which causes Tamra to tell Vicki to stop letting Brooks tell her what to think, which makes Vicki stand up and get in Tamra's face.
Can we cut the cake already? Maybe these ladies need some sugar.
Vicki and Brooks prepare to leave and Tamra follows them to find out why they're leaving. Vicki shouts that Tamra's supposed to be her friend and how dare Tamra talk about Brooks and disrespect him and blah blah blah. Get a grip, Vicki.
Tamra goes to find Briana after Vicki and Brooks leave and they compare notes. Neither of them like Brooks. Tamra's crying. Briana's ready to stick Brooks on a plane to Siberia. Ryan goes back into the house to get Briana away from Tamra so that Tamra can't corrupt Briana while she and Vicki are "in a healing phase." Minus 4.
Heather goes out to get Vicki and Brooks and bring them back in for her special toast. Briana asks Vicki for Vicki's side of the story. Suddenly, it seems Vicki saw Tamra roll her eyes and she chooses Brooks over her daughter. They all head back into the party for the final toast. Minus 12.
Finally, we're cutting this damn cake.
The Real Housewives of Orange County Finale Pic
Heather explains why they're all there - shockingly, it wasn't for the drama - she's changed her name legally and wants to thank her friends, new and old, for coming out to support her. Heather's classy. I like her. Plus 30.
In the worst Vicki moment so far, she muscles her way into the circle to say, basically, "Congrats Heather. When I'm attacked, I fight back and I'm leaving and I'm choosing my man." I'm surprised she didn't drop a "my love tank is full" for good measure. Minus 20.
Heather's big surprise of the night - diamonds in the champagne glasses - goes over well. Tamra gets the lucky flute. Now she's got a new rock to match the one Eddie gave her in Bora Bora.
Closing notes:
  • Tamra asks Heather to do shots. Not a good idea, Tamra. Heather says they don't do shots. Tamra calls her Fancypants. In love, of course.
  • Heather's still opening up a restaurant.
  • Eddie asks Ryan, Tamra's son, to be his best man when Eddie and Tamra tie the knot. Tamra needs another drink.
  • Briana says that she and Vicki's relationship will really continue to suffer as long as Vicki keeps choosing Brooks.
  • Briana and Ryan had a wedding for their friends and family. Briana's also six months pregnant.
  • Tamra and Gretchen are closer than Gretchen and Alexis.
  • Gretchen doesn't want to get married, but she does want a baby. Slade's having his vasectomy reversed.
  • Vicki and Brooks have broken up and gotten back together since the finale was taped.
  • Alexis is happy with her career and her family but not her friends. She and Jim are opening a trampoline park.

Vicki Gunvalson-Tamra Barney Feud to Carry Over on Real Housewives of Orange County Reunion

They're no strangers to drama, but the war of words that erupted between Vicki Gunvalson and Tamra Barney on The Real Housewives of Orange County season finale this week was extreme even by their standards.
What's more, it apparently continues on the upcoming reunion show.
"Vicki insinuated that I cheated on my ex-husband, Simon, with [my current fiancé Eddie Judge]," Tamra revealed after Tuesday's fireworks. "That was just way out of line. Out of anybody in the world, for her to say that, was just totally below the belt."
Vicki Gunvalson PicTamra Barney Real Housewives
Tamra and Vicki's feuding began on the June 26 finale, and when the pair reunited six months later to film the reunion show, things only got worse.
What's changed? "It all comes down to Brooks [Ayers]," Tamra says, blaming Vicki's new man for brainwashing her former BFF. "
"He's changed her so much, I just don't know if she's the same Vicki."
All season long, Tamra questioned Brooks' motives. The reason?
"He's obsessed with the show; I think he's obsessed with being famous," says Tamra, who says Vicki is in denial. "I don't want to see her getting taken advantage of, but she doesn't want to hear anything anybody says, so my hands are tied."
"Right now I am extremely angry with her. I'm broken up with her."

Savannah Guthrie Debuts as Today Show Host; Ann Curry Not Mentioned Once

If you tuned in to NBC's Today for the first time Friday and observed Savannah Guthrie alongside Matt Lauer, you'd never have known Ann Curry existed.
The morning show opened with Guthrie and Lauer behind the desk, minus the usual voiceover announcing the anchors or graphics identifying them.
Matt and Savannah simply launched right into the news.
Savannah Guthrie Pic
Even at 9 a.m., when Savannah Guthrie typically handles the bulk of the show's content, there was zero mention of the shakeup, which became official with Ann Curry's farewell speech on Today not even 24 hours prior.
Instead, she, Lauer and Al Roker segued from a Maroon 5 performance to local news, weather and Guthrie running solo on the first segment of the hour.
She later was joined by Roker and Natalie Morales, who was reportedly in the running to replace Curry (which could have led to Matt Lauer's divorce).
Though Guthrie (pictured) is presumed to be Curry’s successor, especially after what we witnessed today, NBC has yet to make an official announcement.
